I am not familiar with free bsd, so I can't tell you for sure if you could install from there.  I don't think it is possible though.

I don't know of a way to install gentoo from a floppy either.

I know of a boot manager you could install on a floppy (at least in theory -- I don't know how easy it would be to use) that would let you boot from the floppy then transfer over to the cd rom.  It is at http://btmgr.sourceforge.net.  Again, I haven't used this so I don't know how accessible it is.
