Hi Zach,

The way you install speakup depends on how you want to maintain it. If
you want to maintain speakup yourself and to be able to build it into
the kernel, you will have to use the speakup git repository and do the
installation from there, the way you are used to doing it. Also, you
will need to put a line in /etc/portage/profile/package.provided to tell
portage not to attempt to emerge the gentoo package for speakup when you
emerge speechd-up later.

The "official" way of running speakup on gentoo currently is to run it
as modules outside the kernel tree. To do this, we have a package.

Before you install the speakup package, make sure that you have emerged,
configured, compiled and installed at least gentoo-sources-2.6.25-r1.
Then just emerge speakup. Once that is done, make sure to set up the
speakup module you want to load either in
/etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6 or /etc/conf.d/modules depending on
which version of baselayout you are running.

You will also need the very latest speech-dispatcher and speechd-up
packages to have software speech. Just emerge them as usual and add
them to the default runlevel with rc-update.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
