Actually, the issue is that speakup is not built into the kernel on |

distribution media, but it is a set of external modules, similar to how |
17 |
the alsa drivers were handled before they went mainline. This does not |
18 |
have anything to do with the functionality of speakup itself, it is |
19 |
just easier for distros to support building it that way. It makes it |
20 |
much easier for us to keep speakup current. |

Once speakup does get into the main kernel tree, we will look into |

building it into the kernel instead of using modules. Once that |
24 |
happens, speech will start much earlier in the boot sequence than it |

does now. |
