15 Actually, the issue is that speakup is not built into the kernel on
16 distribution media, but it is a set of external modules, similar to how
17 the alsa drivers were handled before they went mainline. This does not
18 have anything to do with the functionality of speakup itself, it is
19 just easier for distros to support building it that way. It makes it
20 much easier for us to keep speakup current.

22 Once speakup does get into the main kernel tree, we will look into
23 building it into the kernel instead of using modules. Once that
24 happens, speech will start much earlier in the boot sequence than it
25 does now.
