It indeed does not exist on my system at this moment.
I only have /dev/fd/[0-3] . Should this get created at
boot time by udev or something?

Bryan, regarding my system info, here is my "emerge
--info" output below. This is a pretty basic system as
I've only done a basic install so far and haven't
added much to it yet. The system itself is a DPW 500AU
(aka Miata). I had started to update my tool chain
when I started getting this error. It looks like it
successfully built the updated GLIBC (with NPTL
support) and things went to heck after that.
