Toolchain and Kernel development |
21 |
---------------------------------- |
22 |
|
23 |
Thanks mainly to Bryan Østergaard (kloeri) and our base herd, the toolchain |
24 |
and the kernel are in very good health: |
25 |
|
26 |
* GCC |
27 |
GCC was stabilized few days ago to version 3.4.4. Our next step will be |
28 |
trying to get gcc-4 working in the testing branch. |
29 |
|
30 |
* Kernel |
31 |
New kernel alpha keywords reached Portage tree, so the current situation |
32 |
is: |
33 |
|
34 |
- 2.4 series: 2.4.30 (stable) -- 2.4.32 (testing) |
35 |
- 2.6 series: 2.6.14.2 (stable) -- 2.6.15_rc5 (testing) |
36 |
|
37 |
udev and nptl support is working fine on the 2.6 kernel series. |
38 |
|
39 |
* C libraries |
40 |
glibc-2.3.5 hit the stable branch a few days ago after being more than |
41 |
a month in testing and see no important bugs on it. This version allows |
42 |
us to avoid the critical "Threads defuncts on Alpha" bug (#100259). |
43 |
Everybody without nptl support is encourage to install this version as |
44 |
soon as possible. |
45 |
|
46 |
* Binutils |
47 |
kloeri is planning on bumping to stable binutils 2.16.1 in the next |
48 |
few days. This way, the whole toolchain will be completely up to date. |
49 |
|
50 |
Security Bugs |
51 |
------------- |
52 |
|
53 |
The Alpha arch team is pleased to say that we've managed all security bugs |
54 |
within a very reasonable response time. At the moment, no delay on |
55 |
marking stable versions when security requires it. |
56 |
|
57 |
Kudos also, to our security herd and rest of our arch teams for keeping |
58 |
Gentoo |
59 |
security in a high level. |
60 |
|
61 |
SELinux development |
62 |
------------------- |
63 |
|
64 |
Stephen Bennett (spb) is currently working on SELinux support for |
65 |
Gentoo/Alpha |
66 |
and we hope to see a SELinux profile for alpha in the tree as soon as we |
67 |
feel |
68 |
confident about it. |
69 |
|
70 |
A little note here to say thanks to Dforge and Virginia Computer Science |
71 |
Department for maintaining our testing computers and adding the new boxes |
72 |
to support SELinux development. |
73 |
|
74 |
Modular Xorg on Gentoo/Alpha |
75 |
---------------------------- |
76 |
|
77 |
Thanks to our developer Stefaan De Roeck (stefaan) the modular Xorg porting |
78 |
to alpha is going pretty well. We are still waiting for upstream to fix some |
79 |
errors before putting the alpha keyword on it: |
80 |
81 |
|
82 |
Stefaan also has a tinderbox to check modular xorg on alpha: |
83 |
84 |
|
85 |
Experimental java on Gentoo/Alpha |
86 |
--------------------------------- |
87 |
|
88 |
After some work trying to fix compaq-java (see bug #84306) we are nearly |
89 |
sure it is a waste of time trying to make something unsupported upstream |
90 |
and obsolete (provide jre/jdk-1.3) work. |
91 |
|
92 |
After some experiences with SableVM, Thomas Cort (tcort) has been |
93 |
playing with |
94 |
lastest version of this free alternative to make java work on Alpha. SableVM |
95 |
seems to work with basic packages so, our plan is to set up an overlay and |
96 |
start playing with this. |

Alpha Arch testers Project |
102 |
-------------------------- |
103 |
|
104 |
Fernando J. Pereda (ferdy) is working these days on setting up our Arch |
105 |
Testers project which has given very good results on other arch teams |
106 |
inside Gentoo (mainly amd64). |
107 |
|
108 |
For more information, you can read the overview on the amd64 arch |
109 |
testers' project page to see what this project is about: |

112 |
Future change on the Alpha Project Page |
113 |
--------------------------------------- |
114 |
|
115 |
We hope to make some changes on our official project page to keep public |
116 |
info |
117 |
well structured and a bit more updated than it is now. Also starting |
118 |
subproject sections with information about arch testers, SELinux and |
119 |
java would be good. |
