It came down to plain old bad hardware - I tested out a few other cards in the
alpha and they all showed up in SRM as Ethernet cards. I returned the D-Link
that was not working and got another one - now I am up and working!

I still would like to have the DEC cards working in case I want to experiment
with net booting. The errors I get are ierrs in Freebsd and receive errors in
linux (sometimes other strange errors as well). I am guessing it is just old
hardware unless you have a suggestion.

What chips are on the cards?  There are very few Ethernet chips that the
SRM console supports.  For the most part, the list is tulip (2104x,
2114x); Intel EtherExpress Pro (82557, 82558, 82559); and Broadcom 5703-
and 5704-based Gigabit Ethernet adapters.  Furthermore, most of the time
you need a Digital/Compaq/hp branded adapter for the PCI ids to be
recognized by SRM.

Sounds like a strange problem to me.  How are the adapters showing up
when you do "show dev"?  How about "show config"?
