Indeed. For the record, I was able to emerge -e system after setting USE=vanilla for gcc and appending -fgnu89-inline to CFLAGS for cpio. To set CFLAGS on a per-package basis, I created etc/portage/env/<category>/<package>. This seems much neater than the instructions on the wiki[1]. Why doesn't the wiki explain this method?
