I used to be able to start a prefix shell on my SUSE workstation, and then
launch prefix-emerged Emacs from there. An Emacs window would appear just
as expected.

Not so anymore. Emacs complains "Display :0.0 unavailable, simulating -nw"
and starts up in nano fashion in the existing xterm window.

Other prefix X applications, e g xclock, won't start at all.

It does not help to do `xhost +' in a different (non-prefixed) shell on
the workstation. And this was never required before anyway.

It does not help to try other settings of the DISPLAY environment variable
(and I never bothered about it before).

It is not a general X problem on the workstation. If I don't enter a
prefix shell I can start Emacs and xclock etc with no problem.

My USE flags include the "X" flag.

My workstation has not been reconfigured.

I tried emerging yet another X application. I don't see any particular
warnings at emerge time. But the emerged application cannot be launched.

I also happen to have some old prefix trees lying around. If I enter a
prefix shell in a 2008-05-09 tree I can launch its X applications with no
problem. If I try a 2008-05-22 tree the problem is present. So it appears
that the problem occurred sometime since May 9.

Anyone else seeing this? Any clue as to what it can be?
