I used to be able to start a prefix shell on my SUSE workstation, and then |

launch prefix-emerged Emacs from there. An Emacs window would appear just |

as expected. |

Not so anymore. Emacs complains "Display :0.0 unavailable, simulating -nw" |

and starts up in nano fashion in the existing xterm window. |

Other prefix X applications, e g xclock, won't start at all. |

It does not help to do `xhost +' in a different (non-prefixed) shell on |

the workstation. And this was never required before anyway. |

It does not help to try other settings of the DISPLAY environment variable |

(and I never bothered about it before). |

It is not a general X problem on the workstation. If I don't enter a |

prefix shell I can start Emacs and xclock etc with no problem. |

My USE flags include the "X" flag. |

I tried emerging yet another X application. I don't see any particular |

warnings at emerge time. But the emerged application cannot be launched. |

I also happen to have some old prefix trees lying around. If I enter a |

prefix shell in a 2008-05-09 tree I can launch its X applications with no |

problem. If I try a 2008-05-22 tree the problem is present. So it appears |

that the problem occurred sometime since May 9. |
