This is strange:
Try these commands somewhere
inside /home/mdmcmull/.overlay/var/tmp/portage:

$ ar -x /usr/lib/libiconv.a shr4.o
$ ls -l shr4.o
Which permission does shr4.o have ?
Which permission does that directory have ?
What is your umask set to ?
$ strip -e shr4.o

That portage-patch[1] seems to be not yet in portage.
Grobian, is it because it is too much a hack (but keeps diffs small) ?
