Maybe we should create a page "bootstrap-prefix-launcher.xml" or
something that actually gives a slight introduction and some hints next
to the pointer to previously mentioned sf url on our Gentoo webspace...

Yeah, that's the main problem I guess.  Though I'm not sure if
prefix-launcher in its current incarnation copes with the rsync tree
(and no subversion), and the changed instructions.
