It was my fault(mostly).  I was using the wrong bash.  Apparently, the 
one I have at /usr/local/bin doesn't work real well.  I figured it out 
when openssl failed to install.

I tried it again with /usr/bin/bash and it's working so far.  It's so 
easy to get just one thing wrong.  I did edit my .bashrc file to set all 
the variables and parameters so I don't have to keep doing it every time 
I log out and back in.
