Same issue with:
%% emerge --version
Portage 2.2.00.10770-prefix (default-prefix/linux/amd64, gcc-4.2.4,
unavailable, 2.6.9-55.ELsmp x86_64)

Naturally, a valid workaround is to use --color=n as well.

I skeptical of a 'trunk problem' because rc1 works fine on my Gentoo Linux box.
