You'll need the sessionname for wmaker # ls /etc/X11/Sessions/ Choose the "session" that starts wmaker and change /etc/rc.conf Make sure the value in /etc/rc.conf matches the filename (case sensitive!) My guess is it's called 'windowmaker' not 'wmaker'

rc-update add xdm default this starts /etc/init.d/xdm, which starts the login manager specified in /etc/rc.conf -- gentoo-amd64@g.o mailing list
