6 Do you have gigabytes of free space on the volume housing /var/tmp/portage?
7 Portage leaves its temporary workspace on failure. You have had a lot of

9 Sufficient free space on / and /usr?
10 Hardware problems?
11 cpu overheating - is the cpu fan running?
12 general overheating? all fans running?
13 Memory problems? perhaps reseat the memory modules.
14 I/O errors?
15 Corrupted file system? Try fsck.
