I use local overlays (the main one also available on GitHub) more than going outside Portage. But it occurred to me that I also install calibre outside of Portage, in /usr/local; it’s notorious for not working when repackaged. And I do have parts of TeXLive installed by Portage because they get pulled in, but if I actually want to use TeX I have the real, complete TeXLive distribution installed in my home.
