IME if you're getting the Black and white screen with the big old "X"
mouse cursor, you have a working X config.
I would suggest that you backup your current"live" config and copy the
new one in it's place... somthing like...
cd /etc/X11
mv xorg.conf xorg.conf-original
cp /root/xorg.conf.new xorg.conf
then restart your XDM with;
/etc/init.x/xdm restart
I assume you have compiled and installed a window manager (gnome/kde/twm
etc..) and that this is setup in /etc/rc.conf ?
Should have the desired effect.....
