Subject: chroot emerges hang
Date: Tue, 04 Apr 2006 13:46:08 +1000
G'day all,

I'm having an interesting issue with emerge's done in my x86 chroot.
Emerge any package and it will build correctly until it gets to the
section "man:" where is tries to gzip man pages. It will then hang
until a Ctrl-C it to stop.

For instance, emerging bash ends with:

make[1]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/bash-3.1_p16/work/bash-3.1/po'
 >>> Completed installing bash-3.1_p16 into
/var/tmp/portage/bash-3.1_p16/image/

man:
gzipping man page: rbash.1
gzipping man page: bashbug.1
gzipping man page: bash.1
gzipping man page: builtins.1
info:
fixing GNU info symlink: bashref.info.gz
gzipping GNU info page: bash.info

... and then hangs.

It doesn't seem to be gzip hanging (a ps ax | grep gzip gives no result
while the hanging is taking place). An strace seems to show that the
hang happens at about the same time scanelf is used but that may not be
relevant (or I may have read it incorrectly)

I've emerged various versions of portage obtained by using quickpkg on a
nother (x86) box and have tried them.

I've tried with and without sandbox in FEATURES.

A lot more delving into what's going on to do - but wondered if anyone
else had had this issue or could advise on steps to take next to
diagnose the exact issue.

Appreciate it,

Will.
