Hi Allen,
I'm sorry to hear of your problems with AMD64. My AMD64 machine is
VERY stable. I cannot remember the last time it did anything major. I
have a few issues with things like mplayer stranding various processes
as the day wears on, but other than that nothing. It all just works.

I do have some very specific problems with Java under 64-bit so
I've built a 32-bit chroot for that. When I run into something on the
web that really requires 32-bit multimedia I'll view it in the chroot
if it's really important to do so. I haven't done that in maybe a
month or so. It doesn't come up all that much for me. Mostly I use the
chroot to access one specific web site that depends on Java.

I have 3 other Gentoo x86 machines here. My wife's desktop which
serves as a MythTV backend server and two MythTV frontend only
machines. They all work well as does my AMD64 machine. In some ways it
works better. I'm doing low-latency audio work with Ardour on a stock
Gentoo kernel at this point. No realtime-preempt patches at all. I
also watch DVDs using Xine, listen to my ripped CD collection stored
on external 1394 drives using Aqualung, and do all my browsing in
Firefox. I mostly run Gnome.

I'd be happy to share any config files you'd be interested in if
you think it would help.

Cheers,
Mark
