When you have a chance reboot the machine and try it again. Don't run
any apps, open a terminal and run free.
I just rebooted. Here's what I see before running any apps:
mark@c2stable ~ $ free
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 12303060 462120 11840940 0 12412 178712
-/+ buffers/cache: 270996 12032064
Swap: 12602976 0 12602976
mark@c2stable ~ $
It doesn't drop much running Firefox to send this email:
mark@c2stable ~ $ free
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 12303060 655776 11647284 0 13824 230160
-/+ buffers/cache: 411792 11891268
Swap: 12602976 0 12602976
mark@c2stable ~ $
Cheers,
Mark
