At least what you can run do is run `emerge --resume --ask` after emerge -e 
world has failed. Then when it has calculated what to emerge you can press 
Ctrl+z (which will suspend the emerge process). Then unmerge the something 
else and finally run `fg` to resume the suspended emerge process and 
answer "yes" to start the merge...
