Gentoo will never have a 6.9 version available...the devs are only
going the modular route.
If you really want 7.0, I would suggest unmasking it, and helping to
identify any problems with the build or dependancies. The ebuilds
have gotten much better in recent weeks, so it is possible that the
problems you had previously have been resolved.
