Is this a brand new system or one running Slackware already? I'm |
2 |
guessing the easiest way would be to add a second NIC. |

If you already have a linux OS running on the box, and have some spare disk |
5 |
space, you could start the install from the disk setup step. This way you would |
6 |
have network support. |
7 |
|
8 |
There is a networkless install, but it requires copying all the |
9 |
distfiles from the CD, so this will still contain the old kernel and |
10 |
when your finished, you're still without network. |
11 |
|
12 |
If you're a Slacker, you may be able download the latest source from |
13 |
kernel.org, and then start the networkless install |
14 |
(http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/2005.1/index.xml). When you get |
15 |
to the step configuring the kernel step, just extract the kernel.org |
16 |
sources, configure, compile and install. Complete the networkless install, and |
17 |
reboot. When the system comes up, you should have network support, and |
18 |
be able to 'emere --sync' and then 'emerge -av gentoo-sources'. This |
19 |
will then get your system to the current gentoo kernel (with support for |
20 |
your nic). After compiling and installing the gentoo-sources, you can |
21 |
remove the kernel.org sources. At this point, I would look into |
22 |
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Custom_Stage4, so you don't have to mess |
23 |
around with this in the future. |
