I have no sound and don't know how to debug it.
Another strange problem is :

I upgraded from 2.6.15-r3 to 2.6.16-r7 yesterday. I have sound - had to
do an update-modules as welli. I have not seen either issue. But, Michal's
problem with sound is probably because of the system not being able to
generate /etc/modprobe.conf.

I've solved that by running /sbin/generate-modprobe.conf manually (from
modules-update) :
sudo /sbin/generate-modprobe.conf
modprobe: Invalid line 125 in /etc/modules.conf
modprobe
Failed to to run modprobe. Giving up.
well, I've removed that modprobe and it's working now. Might be my
fault.
Perhaps deleting (move the original out of /etc) and re-trying it?
Re-emerge - sys-apps/module-init-tools?

tried, didn't helped. I don't know why there wasn't an error with
modprobe
command in /etc/modules.d/xxxx
all done.

My problem is alsa's dmix. As you could see from my first email,
I have two cards and everything is dmixed to hw:0,0, which is
Audiophile 2496.
It was worked before (gentoo-sources-2.6.15-gentoo-r5 and sooner), but
stops with r7.
