He did not see this problem while booted on livecd and emerging stage3 
tarball, snapshot, gentoo sources, and the miscellany between running 
genkernel and the first boot of the new system. After booting the new 
genkernel installed system to verify satisfactory booting he used 
genkernel --menuconfig all to add modules for alsa and his network card, 
added net.eth1 to default run level. Rebooted, emerged alsa-utils (noted 
stoppage problem), ran alsaconf, added alsasound to default run level. 
Rebooted, verified alsa working. All subsequent emerges have had stoppage. 
Emerges work as long as a key, any key, is pressed intermittently or held 
down.

I'm guessing a change got made in menuconfig purposeful or accidental that 
was not in devices sound or network. Any guesses as to what change from the 
defaults could produce this particular wierdness?
