*Shrug*
We fixed a boot issue last year on gentoo-user with the 
mount-notail-touch-everything-reinstall-grub technique.  Maybe it's only 
certain tail'd layouts, or maybe just a simple re-install of grub would 
have done it.  I've never encountered the problem myself.

Well, tail only affects reiser AFAIK.  But, tail has been the default on 
reiser for a /while/ if not always.  I hear in reiser4 you won't even be 
able to turn it off.

Agreed.  Reiser (3) has been rock-solid on my systems for years, and gentoo 
supports it on the live CD, so that's my system recovery tool.
