Here's what I have so far on our proposed "UberGnome" desktop...

We do this in two phases. These phases will depend on outside
development, and will need some interaction from the developers on the
software we include.

We should also keep patching to a minimum, relying on gconf and other
configuration files to make our changes. Any patches should be
submitted upstream to the respective devs. Any software/changes made
will not be exclusive and will be licensed under the GPL as applicable.

The basic structure will be a 'metabuild' with USE flags for the
differing options, i.e. music would install rhythmbox, news installs
pan, im installs gaim, etc... Along with the installs of the software,
we should make sure the system uses those programs for the correct mime
types and urls. We should also develop a script (or set of scripts) to
handle our gconf tweaks to make the modifications easy to apply and
remove.

Phase One:
    Based on Gnome 2.6
All of the above gconf tweaks/additions will be included
Choose a pleasing non-gaudy theme set to use
    Custom splash screen and backround

Phase Two:
    Include dbus, gnome-volume-manager and dashboard
Work with the folks doing Project Utopia to integrate any other
usability tweaks

Software list:
Gaim - Instant messaging - aim://, ?
Pan - News reader - news://
Rhythmbox - Itunes on 'roids - mime types?
Evolution - Mail, contacts, etc - mailto://, web calender?
Gdesklets - Eye candy - Nothing here, just eye candy
Xchat - IRC Chat - irc://
Straw or Liferea - RSS grabber - mime types?
Epiphany + Extensions - Web browser - http://, https://
Ximian OO - Office documents - mime types?
Sound Juicer - Music backup - dunno
Totem - Movie player/thumbnailer - mime types, web casting
Easytag - Music tagger/renamer
GThumb - Picture browser, uses gphoto2 to import photos - dbus must have
Gnome-system-tools - duh... - Needs to be hacked to work
