7 |
Yeah, it's true. I can use paranoia from the CLI to rip tracks, or force |
8 |
cdda2wav to use the paranoia lib, which works OK. But it chaps my ass that |
9 |
cdda2wav is _hard coded_ into apps such as xcdroast and eroaster. I had to |
10 |
hack the python code on eroaster to get cdda2wav to use the paranoia lib. |
11 |
No biggie, really, since I grok python, but a PITA nonetheless. |
12 |
|
13 |
I would expect that rips are normally either good, or audibly bad. Given |
14 |
that the data is digital, I would expect that the most common problem would |
15 |
be ditital artifacts introduced by the ripping system, which are usually |
16 |
quite audible. There's no D->A->D involved. Otherwise, it's a bit for bit |
17 |
copy, yes? |
18 |
|
19 |
I don't care about metadata. Most of my work with ripping and burning is |
20 |
personal. I'm a professional musician in addition to being a bit of a geek, |
21 |
and I have studio master CDs of my own work, and some very small scale or |
22 |
mastering production work I do for friends who have their own masters in |
23 |
other formats. I burn a limited number of one-off CDs of my own albums for |
24 |
sale at my gigs and workshops, run off the tray cards and inserts on a color |
25 |
printer, and have nice products which I can sell. |
26 |
|
27 |
At this point I'm getting pretty good results. I'm using cdrecord inside of |
28 |
xcdroast to burn from wav files which are of good quality. I've been using |
29 |
ecasound to do any level adjustments necessary (one of my production masters |
30 |
is c.a. 60% down from the clipping level, which makes CDs where one has to |
31 |
crank up the volume a bit. Ecasound fixed that for me on the wav files.) |

Thanks for the links. My situation is somewhat different in that I'm not |
42 |
generally ripping for file sharing purposes, but the information is useful. |
43 |
I can't get to www.hydrogenaudio.org right now. It's dark to the Internet, |
44 |
either down or cut off from the i-cloud somewhere. The name resolves but |
45 |
the site doesn't ping. |
