Yeah, it's true. I can use paranoia from the CLI to rip tracks, or force
cdda2wav to use the paranoia lib, which works OK. But it chaps my ass that
cdda2wav is _hard coded_ into apps such as xcdroast and eroaster. I had to
hack the python code on eroaster to get cdda2wav to use the paranoia lib.
No biggie, really, since I grok python, but a PITA nonetheless.

I would expect that rips are normally either good, or audibly bad. Given
that the data is digital, I would expect that the most common problem would
be ditital artifacts introduced by the ripping system, which are usually
quite audible. There's no D->A->D involved. Otherwise, it's a bit for bit
copy, yes?

I don't care about metadata. Most of my work with ripping and burning is
personal. I'm a professional musician in addition to being a bit of a geek,
and I have studio master CDs of my own work, and some very small scale or
mastering production work I do for friends who have their own masters in
other formats. I burn a limited number of one-off CDs of my own albums for
sale at my gigs and workshops, run off the tray cards and inserts on a color
printer, and have nice products which I can sell.

At this point I'm getting pretty good results. I'm using cdrecord inside of
xcdroast to burn from wav files which are of good quality. I've been using
ecasound to do any level adjustments necessary (one of my production masters
is c.a. 60% down from the clipping level, which makes CDs where one has to
crank up the volume a bit. Ecasound fixed that for me on the wav files.)

Thanks for the links. My situation is somewhat different in that I'm not
generally ripping for file sharing purposes, but the information is useful.
I can't get to www.hydrogenaudio.org right now. It's dark to the Internet,
either down or cut off from the i-cloud somewhere. The name resolves but
the site doesn't ping.
