You can add the "-t" option to emerge to get a tree of what depends on
what. Its not perfect, but it works for most cases. The reason it
requires new packages is that you may have altered your USE flags, which
now alter what should be built. Most of these packages will continue to
work fine w/o being rebuilt, but to use the options you have specified,
should be. (AKA: nautilus using HAL).

add "-D" to your emerge list and it should catch most everything, except
maybe orphaned dependencies (which, admitantly, portage *does* have a
problem with these).
