Hi all, |
2 |
|
3 |
I am new to the Gentoo system, having used mainly Red Hat and Debian in the |
4 |
past. After building Linux From Scratch a couple of times I was (and am) |
5 |
fascinated by the portage concept and had to try it out as soon as possible. |
6 |
Here are a few hitches I have experienced and a few questions. Not too much |
7 |
for a single post I hope:) |
8 |
|
9 |
My first install from a build-ix86-20010513.tar.bz2 proceeded well however |
10 |
it transpired that the drivers for 3dfx cards do not get built when X is |
11 |
compiled. Maybe this is fixed now I don't know because... |
12 |
|
13 |
I have just installed default-i686-20010524.tbz2 on a Compaq Armada E500 and |
14 |
all seemed to go well but a couple of points: |
15 |
|
16 |
a) I could not find the kernel module "cb_enabler" on any of your |
17 |
boot/rescue disk sets. This is required to get the tulip_cb module loaded |
18 |
for my pcmcia ethernet card. After "borrowing" said module from else where I |
19 |
managed to get networking up. |
20 |
|
21 |
b) Having got the default profile running I moved on to configuration as per |
22 |
"Gentoo Linux Installation Guide". This went well except that grub looks for |
23 |
files in /boot/grub and the kernel in /boot NOT /boot/boot as suggested. |
24 |
|
25 |
c) Moving on to installing packages the "Portage User Guide" starts with |
26 |
downloading the portage tree with |
27 |
|
28 |
# rsync -avz rsync://cvs.gentoo.org/gentoo-x86-portage/* /usr/portage |
29 |
|
30 |
however after doing this my /usr/portage directory has only an app-admin sub |
31 |
directory ! What happened to the rest ? |
32 |
|
33 |
Can you tell me where/how I can download the portage tree from ? Is it |
34 |
possible to use wget, CVS, whatever ? |
35 |
|
36 |
Sorry to be so wordy. You may here from me again as I indent to persist with |
37 |
Gentoo. I think it's a great idea. I'll try to be brief in future. |
38 |
|
39 |
Thanks |
