I once did some tests with rsyncing tar files rather than individual files, see http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=10108 The conclusion was that using tar archives gave around 85%-90% improvement for general sources (think rsyncing distfiles) and 35% improvement for the portage tree. Of course theres no fundamental reason for this, messing about with rsync options (block size, etc.) might give similar improvements. -- gentoo-dev@g.o mailing list
