[gentoo-dev] emerge update overwrites /etc

I installed gentoo a week or so ago, and I just did an emerge update today for
the first time.  While doing so I came across a major bug.  Every customization
I had under /etc was overwritten.  Even /etc/passwd!  I don't know if it is
being worked on, but I believe the correct behavior would be to have anything
destined for the /etc directory to be installed into a fake etc, say
/tmp/portage/etc, and then use something like FreeBSD's mergemaster to do the
update.
