ebuild glibc-2.2.2-rx.ebuild merge does the job.Take a look at the
ebuild scripts pkg_preinst and pkg_postinst
functions. ld-linux.so.2 and libc.so.6 first get copied to tmp and
symlinked to /lib. Then the new glibc
gets installed on your running system.
After that the symlinks get changed to the libs installed by the new
glibc package.

If that step is finished you can savely unmerge the old glibc version
from your system (if you used an other
version for example glibc-2.2.1) using
ebuild /var/db/pkg/sys-libs/glibc-2.2.1/glibe-2.2.1.ebuild unmerge. That
only removes the stuff that remained from your old glibc.
