No, extremely important point. With PMS we can have things split over
lots of files, and not have to care what file something's in when we
link to it. This means we can move things around between files, not
have to worry about breaking links, and be told automatically if we do
screw up a link. How do we get this using GuideXML?

It's really not. Please point me to professional style guides that do
reference links using "link" as the text.

Which is what? You have to manually copy the source content into the
XML document, fixing the code yourself? Or come up with some convoluted
build scripts to do it?
