These symlinks are present, but it appears that your kernel ebuild process
did not put a valid copy of the kernel source for -ac9 under /usr/src -
there was no version.h in the /usr/src/linux -> linux-2.4.4-ac9, but there
was in the earlier versions.  I've now rm'd the offending source and copied
from the copy of the source I got from /tmp after the ... unpack operation.

Will try again ... success.
