The first time I've installed Gentoo I've started from Stage1 and
following step by step the handbook (and the Gentoo forum) I didn't
have any problem.. Some of my friends, to which I suggested to use
Gentoo, had some problems, but because they didn't follow the handbook
very well.. So, I think that Stage1 and Stage2 are not really a
problem, even for a Gentoo newbie. By the way, this is just my opinion

The Gentoo Release Engineering team is pushing us to remove stage1 and
stage2 references from the Gentoo Handbook. They are getting too many errors
because the user is not able to fully comprehend the implications of a
stage1 or stage2 installation.

This does surprise me, either because it seems rather simple to me, or
because I don't understand it myself (in which case we need(ed) better
information regarding the subject).

In any case, bug #105809 contains a small patch (95K, 3165 lines, mostly
duplicates for architecture-specific chapters that do contain
cross-architecture information) that attempts to move stage1/2 references to
a FAQ in the Gentoo FAQ.

I'd appreciate any feedback on the patch and possible enhancements. Please,
do not provide patches for the patch but rather a new patch. Thanks.

Wkr,
Sven Vermeulen
