I mentioned a reason for this in my email to the list on the new
format. At this point, I'm more concerned with having a visual
reference to the extensive history of commits to metadoc.xml. Also, as
you said, any changes to metadoc run the risk of doing lots more
damage than a change made to a regular guide.

I've done a little bit of stuff in our XSL over the years, but only
small changes. Nothing major. We definitely need someone who's
completely comfortable working with all aspects of our XSLT. Alec
(antarus) has been playing about with a copy of our repo for some
design work; he might be able to contribute a patch or two as issues
come up, if we ask really nicely.
