I vaguely recall from the last time I played with Etoile that the menu server would only work inconsistently.

Then the problem is with Etoile. Etoile 0.3 is probably not too far away.

If you are using bash, try ctl-z then 'kill %1' to kill the app without losing the terminal (if you are unfamiliar with 'kill', try 'help kill' or 'man kill').
