just grab one of the .tbz2 files then

mkdir -p $(portageq envvar PKGDIR)/All
cd $(portageq envvar PKGDIR)/All
wget $filename 
emerge -Kpv gcc
emerge -K gcc

Or just set PORTAGE_BINHOST= and use the -g/-G options (slow)
