Subject: Re: Pax Grsec emerge man fail and emerge iputils fail

I can duplicate this problem with iputils, but have not yet discovered the exact cause.

net-misc/iputils-20060512.ebuild fails here:

if use doc && type -p docbook2html ; then

emake -j1 html man || die

with this error:

make[1]: *** [arping.html] Error 8
make: *** [html] Error 2

Running `make html` outside of the ebuild also fails.

Directly running docbook2html like this works correctly:
docbook2html /usr/portage/distfiles/iputils-s20060512/doc/index.db

The INSTALL note in the iputils tarball reads:

But if "make html" fails too, check that DocBook package is installed
on your machine. If it is installed, and nevertheless "make" does not work,
delete iputils and go to sleep. The next day repeat. If even full reset
did not help, I bring apologies. :-)

This note leads me to believe that upstream expects this to fail some
times but is either unsure of how to fix it or unwilling to fix it. I suspect
the problem is in how make is using docbook2html, but I did not get
that far in my troubleshooting.

I have not tried more recently tarballs to see if the problem still exists.

Regards,
Jason Smathers

On 9/13/07,
