I'd like to recommend common steps in upgrading kernels. |

Unpack the kernel to the usual /usr/src location. |

Copy the .config file from your old /usr/src/linux-version/.config to the |

/usr/src/linux-newversion/ directory. |

Run make oldconfig and answer the new questions. |

Run make menuconfig to verify everything is OK. |

Run make in /usr/src/linux |
| 11 |
Run make modules_install in /usr/src/linux |

Run cp /usr/src/linux/arch/somearch/bzImage /boot/whatever |

update, if necessary, /boot/grub/grub.conf to reflect kernel name changes |

reboot then recompile ALL module systems outside of the kernel (like |

proprietary video drivers, ATI/NVIDIA, lm-sensors, vmware, madwifi, etc.) |

and consider emerge world -e, then reboot again to make sure everything is |

updated. |
