GMANE provides an alternative service for most mailing lists. c.f. bug 424647

I have had problems when alsa-headers have been emerged.
I had sound, but eg. for using software volume control, I had to emerge
-C alsa-oss alsa-headers alsa-utils and then
emerge alsa-oss alsa-utils
Then I had the software volume control in XMMS.
Btw .. do you have alsa-oss installed?
