Try running "X -configure" and see if the configuration file it
generates works. If not, then you'll have to do a search on the web for
your model laptop. A great resource for this is:
http://www.linux-laptop.net/ . They might have something about sound
for your machine as well. Generically for Gentoo you need to
install alsa-utils and then run the alsamixer to adjust sound levels and
unmute everything. See the Gentoo guides for mor information on
getting it to save and restore these volume levels.)
