GMANE provides an alternative service for most mailing lists. c.f. bug 424647
For anyone else on the same mission, I came across this:

Which basically says .. I can do certain things (including patching
Xorg for PowerPlay), but I'm not going to get the same efficiency as I
will with Windows XP. However, from his results, I can get close
enough to make me happy.
