Just to clarify the accountability. The Foundation is accountable to |
21 |
its members. That reflects the business world where 'members' of a |
22 |
corporation are 'share/stock holders' At the moment, members are |
23 |
anyone who has ever voted in a Foundation election. Developers are |
24 |
eligible to become Foundation members after being developers for a |
25 |
year. Those who chose not to vote are not Foundation members and the |
26 |
Foundation is not accountable to non members. |
27 |
|
28 |
There are lots of problems with this. e.g after a few years, most of |
29 |
the votes will be held by ex developers, drobbins is still a member, he |
30 |
has a vote and can stand for election as a trustee. He was nominated |
31 |
too. |
32 |
|
33 |
We cannot change the bit about being accountable to members but we are |
34 |
free to define the qualifications for membership. |
35 |
|
36 |
The requirements for membership now are so restrictive that we will not |
37 |
be able to find people to stand for election as trustees, simply |
38 |
because the set of people interested in becoming Gentoo devepers and |
39 |
those interested in becoming trustees has a very small intersection |
40 |
[1]. |
41 |
|
42 |
There are two ways address that. |
43 |
1. Not have our own Foundation - join one of the umbrella |
44 |
organisations |
45 |
2. Open up membership to Gentoo community participants who do not want |
46 |
to become developers in sense of the word as its used today. |
47 |
|
48 |
[1] if you doubt that, look at the fall off in trustees and the |
49 |
interest in becoming trustees, even in the wake of the publicity at the |
50 |
end of last year. |
