GMANE provides an alternative service for most mailing lists. c.f. bug 424647
Maybe you can use the MACOSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET variable, which is set in
profile.bashrc for both 10.3 and 10.4 to their respective values.
Care to let us into the problem somehow?
