A word of caution: using this variable to detect platform can have 
unpredictable results when directing portage to download files from 
alternative locations (i.e. get ppc binaries or x86 binaries, depending 
on platform).  There's still some work to be done here.  If it fails (be 
sure to test on x86 too), try the `arch` command that most of us have 
been using (see, for example, the xanim ebuilds).
