Duh, noone replied. Now I had to stop being lazy again ;)
Found the culprit:
PAM is set up so only users in the "wheel" group can use "su". Either add
trusted users to "wheel" or go to /etc/pam.d, edit the su file and remove the
"auth required /lib/security/pam_wheel.so use_uid"
line
