Hi

A G5 has Serial-ATA drives. Linux puts these under /dev/sda. (I've
cc'ed swift to see if the handbook says anything about Serial ATA
drives)

You have to partition /dev/sda. My G5 for instance has the following
partition map:

Dual-G5 dev # mac-fdisk /dev/sda
/dev/sda
Command (? for help): p
/dev/sda
# type name length base
( size ) system
dump: name /dev/sda len 8
/dev/sda1 Apple_partition_map Apple 63 @ 1
( 31.5k) Partition map
/dev/sda2 Apple_Bootstrap bootstrap 1600 @
171966528 (800.0k) NewWorld bootblock
/dev/sda3 Apple_HFS Apple_HFS_Untitled_2 167510016 @
262208 ( 79.9G) HFS
/dev/sda4 Apple_UNIX_SVR2 swap 4194304 @
167772224 ( 2.0G) Linux swap
/dev/sda5 Apple_UNIX_SVR2 boot 262144 @ 64
(128.0M) Linux native
/dev/sda6 Apple_UNIX_SVR2 gentoo 148204928 @
171968128 ( 70.7G) Linux native

Block size=512, Number of Blocks=320173056
DeviceType=0x0, DeviceId=0x0

Command (? for help):
