Hi,

I hope this isn't too dumb of a newbie question ... I recently downloaded
the 2004.2 Live CD for Gentoo PPC stage 3 for the G4 from the
metadistribution site's download page (file named stage3-g4-20040714.tar.bz2
) ... after I bunzip2 this baby, of course I end up with merely
stage3-g4-20040714.tar ... and when I try to untar it (via $ tar xvf
stage3-g4-20040714.tar ) I am getting tar errors at the end (I am using tar
on a Powerbook running OS X 10.3.4). Do I need gnutar instead? I tried
gnutar -x but no luck (it just hung).

I plan on untarring and then creating a bootable Joliet / Rock ridge iso
with mkisofs and then burn it to a bootable cd with cdrecord (both provided
courtesy of fink). I also nabbed the ppc 2004.2 packages iso. Am I doing the
right thing? I'd like to be a bit on the cutting edge and use 2004.2 if
possible. Thanks for any suggestions. I am quite looking forward to taking
Gentoo for a spin.
