I've found on my tiBook 500 these two scenarios for switching consoles:

fn+ctrl+option+shift+F<number> to switch to a specific console from
within X.

option+fn+F<number> to switch to a specific console while not in X.
(order is important on this one.  It may be ctrl instead of option,
I don't have by laptop with me.).
